Free Farmers Market Boosts Food Security Awareness at Fountain Mall

Instructions

An initiative aimed at addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainability unfolded at Fountain Mall this Wednesday as students eagerly gathered for the bi-annual Free Farmers Market. The event provided an array of fresh produce and non-perishable items, all offered free of charge to students, faculty, and staff. Alongside vibrant tents lining the pathway to the food tables, a notable presence was that of the Student Food Security Council, represented by Waco junior Bella Burns and Bryant, Arkansas freshman Lachlan Walsh. Their mission is to highlight and combat the issue of food insecurity prevalent on campus.

A cornerstone of the council's activities involves repurposing leftover food from dining halls and catering events through collaboration with the Food Recovery Network. This endeavor ensures that surplus food reaches those in need rather than being discarded. Additionally, the council undertakes educational efforts to enlighten students about reducing food waste. According to Walsh, there’s often confusion regarding the disposal of food, leading to unnecessary wastage even when composting systems are in place. Currently, they are working towards establishing a more efficient system for recovering leftover food in partnership with Chartwells, Baylor's dining services provider, though challenges persist.

Beyond raising awareness, the event served as a platform for students to discover valuable resources. Austin freshman Georgia Rushing expressed her surprise upon learning about the farmer’s market, vowing to return in the fall. Organized by The Store, Baylor’s on-campus food pantry that opened in 2021, such initiatives play a pivotal role in expanding access to essential items for students while alleviating the stigma associated with seeking support. Students were also encouraged to stay updated with the council’s ongoing efforts via their Instagram page, where updates on volunteer opportunities and new projects are regularly shared.

Through collaborative efforts and community engagement, the Free Farmers Market not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters a culture of sustainability and mutual support among the student body. It exemplifies how collective action can lead to meaningful change, encouraging individuals to contribute positively to their surroundings and create a more inclusive environment.
