On April 8, the New Jersey Food Council convened a diverse group of industry professionals at Caesars Atlantic City for its annual Trade Relations Conference. This gathering emphasized the growing influence of technology within the state's substantial $136 billion food distribution sector. Under the banner of "Emerging Technology & Emerging Opportunities," attendees participated in dynamic discussions, including a fireside chat and panel on innovation, as well as celebrated achievements through awards presentations. Notably, the event recognized legislative success with the passage of the Organized Retail Theft Bill, reinforcing collaboration among stakeholders to strengthen New Jersey's food economy.
Jason Read, chairman of the NJFC Board of Directors from Wawa, underscored the importance of fostering strong trade relationships. These connections are pivotal in driving economic growth within the state’s retail and supplier networks. During the conference, Linda Doherty, president of the NJFC, highlighted the recent legal victory as a testament to effective advocacy efforts. The bill, enacted by Governor Phil Murphy, aims to deter organized retail theft by increasing penalties for offenders.
Another highlight was the presentation of the Jimmy Ostling Trade Relations Award to Matt Lipowski of J&J Snacks. Recognized for his leadership in uniting various sectors of the food industry, Lipowski also contributes significantly to NJFC’s Leadership Development program. His former colleague, Jim Ostling, praised him for embodying trust, collaboration, and mentorship throughout his career.
A fireside chat between Joe Fantozzi of Allegiance Retail Services and Lou Scaduto Jr., CEO of Food Circus Supermarkets, explored pressing matters impacting retail and distribution dynamics. Additionally, a panel discussion moderated by Lawrence Inserra III delved into technological advancements in food retail. Panelists Nawshi Williams of CROSSMARK, Kenny Olson of In-Store Connect by Quad, and David McIntosh of Instacart shared insights on enhancing customer interactions and optimizing supply chain collaborations.
The conference culminated with a golf outing at Galloway National Golf Club on April 9. Looking ahead, the NJFC will host its “Night of Distinction” gala on May 21 at the Palace at Somerset Park. Esteemed honorees include Mike Stigers of Wakefern, Steve Heggelke of Bozzuto’s Inc., and Bob Unanue of Goya Cares, celebrating their contributions to the industry.
